Alex Kearns was more than the frightening number that appeared on a screen. He was a son who lingered in the kitchen to talk with his mother, a brother, a musician, a student, and a young man still deciding how he would make his place in the world. One thing he already knew: he wanted his life to help other people.
In his final hours, Alex was not asking for special treatment. He was asking for clarity. Robinhood had shown the twenty-year-old a temporary negative cash balance of roughly $730,000 while parts of a multi-leg options trade were still settling—a figure that did not reflect what he actually owed. Believing he faced an impossible debt, Alex reached out for an explanation and received automated replies instead of timely human support. The tragedy was not simply that a complex transaction was hard to understand; it was that a platform built to welcome inexperienced investors failed to meet a terrified young customer with the clarity and compassion he needed.
Yet the truest measure of Alex’s life is not an account balance. His family carried his instinct to help others forward by establishing the Alex Kearns UNL Memorial Fund, which supports student well-being and suicide-prevention programs at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Through that work, the kindness they knew in him continues to reach people he never had the chance to meet. Alex deserved to hear that help was available and that the number on his screen was not the whole truth. His legacy now helps ensure that another student can receive that reassurance in time.
